I use Free FLV Converter to download and convert the file. It's FREE.
Free FLV converter
I prefer to save it as avi file. Not only for better quality, but the process speed when you edit it in movie maker or another video editing software.
It is easy, free, and useful in school: multimedia education is essential for today's schools: I used a teachertube video on the electoral college: it was able to explain this complicated process in 3 minutes: the ability to replay, stop, and pause is better than doing that to me in front of the classroom: then I was able to ask higher level thinking by having them evaluating the system rather than trying to have them comprehend the system:
realplayer has an automatic download prompt for online videos:
students know how to do this, it is a process of teaching them what, why, and how it can improve education:
ingenuity on the blog:

I was able to download a video clip of a thunderstorm that I will most likely use in my digital story. The Firefox add-on makes it even simpler by not having to go to the actual Media Converter website every time you want to convert.
i am a big fan of mediaconverter.org thanks to the workshop with Dr. Robin a few weeks ago. I have downloaded tons of videos that I teach with and mediaconverter.org came in really handy with my presentation for Cam's class and will be used to help me out with my final project as well.
I was successful using Media Converter to convert a You Tube video into .mov and .avi. simply by using the URL. This is so much better than the .flv file that is generated when downloaded from You Tube. The embedded code worked well online, but no editing could be done. This free web based option for converting You Tube videos is great! I have already used this in my work and hope to be able to find supporting You Tube videos for my Digital Story as well.
I used the mediaconverter.org web browser plugin to download a Dodge Charger promo off YouTube. I saved it as a .mov file and was able to view. Pretty cool. I was also able to download video for my digital story. I actually couldn't get over how easy it was to do and then edit in iMovie.
I used Media converter to download a video that I used on my midterm project. It was seamless, I did not have a problem and the process was pretty quick. I am still not too sure about telling whoever what I am downloading, I know that they must be gathering information to sell, it is the big brother thing. However I did benefit and I guess they deserve to be compensated for the service.
Adding video to the digital story gives it a new dimension. Some my criticize that what we are creating is just a narrated slide show and in a way it is but there is more art to it. The video gives the viewer a new level of appreciation, even thought it is no more or less a piece of art.
I do not mind downloading a file from youtube and converting it, I recently learned how so I am really enjoying it. I do think that its a great way for people who dont know how to use technology well (like me) to use. I use media converter.
I enjoyed downloading clips and videos from Youtube.I was teaching the day after the class about the ancient sport by the Mayans and Aztecs and I found a Youtube video of a simulation of them playing the game. The kids really liked it and they remembered the game by what they saw in the download from Youtube.
I am planning on using videos in my digitial story and I hope to find more things to incoporate in my teaching through video downloads.
I used the media converter recommended in class, and I loved it. I was able to convert some of my son’s baby videos from quick time files to wmv files, and now I can actually edit them. I also downloaded a movie file about dinosaurs from you tube that I had considered using in my Engines of Our Ingenuity Project, and was success. However, I tried using Adobe Photoshop Elements, and I could not get the slideshow to work on my computer. I kept receiving error messages, and the program would shut down. When I ran the error report it said something was wrong with windows on my computer. Then I downloaded Adobe Photoshop on another computer in my house, and I was able to work on my digital story, but I just wasn’t happy with how choppy it kept appearing in the preview. I’m not sure if it was the computer or the program, so I ended up just using still images in photo story because I was happier with the quality of the movie. I had the same error messages when I tried using Movie Maker, so I am not sure what is wrong with my computer, and would appreciate any suggestions on how I can try to fix the problem
keepvid, and other progrre useful in the classroom: it it important to consider the fair use law when doing this. I am still uncertain with this law and how it applies to this program. can i use it without major issues with copyright laws/??
It does requires patience to use these programs but it can enhance the classroom instructions: as a focus or literacy: integrating into the curriculum : It also resolves the issue of school filters of sites: download and use: the most inovating way for bell focus activities: with video editing software, we can personalize it into a streamless lesson plan. like what we did in cam's class:
I love the media converter, I wish I'd heard about it sooner. I did some video conversion (mov) to avi. It's so fast! I want to use video in my digital story, BUT I don't want to give up the ease of using the photostory program, and I don't want to give up the transitions in still images if I use windows movie maker, so I'll look at other programs, but I'll probably stick with still images.
I was able to download the video clip and save it to my computer successfully from YouTube with media Converter.
I will not use a video clip in my digital story at this time. But, I do plan to create a video clip in the near future.
At this moment, I feel as though I need to practice more on creating a video clip.
Media converter is a very cool program. It is simple to use...not unlike creating PDF files like the PDF converter from Adobe Acrobat Reader.
I do not have access to the video clips from the school I am doing my project on this semester, but I can get a hold of them later, and now I know I can add them to this digital story for my dissertation proposal in the future!
I am now a pro at downloading video clips from youtube and I have also learned to convert video clips as well. The process is very brief and usually creates a smaller file depending own what file you save it as. This is a great resources for creating video clips that are useful in the classroom.
I used Media Converter to download a YouTube video about fashion. It was easy and right to the point by following the 5 steps. It is very useful that Media Converter gives the option to select the file type format that we want to save it, and also the additional options regarding codec, bitrate and resolution. Before Media Converter I have been using YouTubeDVDVideoSoft Free Studio from YouTube but I couldn't find it anymore.
Something I forgot to discuss before are my feelings about using video clips in digital stories.
For my midterm project about Pluto I used several video segments that I downloaded from UnitedStreaming. I think I fairly used them because I created something different than the originals, I used what was necessary for my educational purpose, and I gave credit to them.
The media converter program that I used is called AVS Video Converter 6. I had to pay $39 for this particular program but it is extremely user friendly and works like a charm. I recommend this program to anyone who needs to do video or audio conversions.

My wife is very grateful for this class. I have shared my new-found knowledge and she has downloaded a ton of videos from youtube for here classroom. She teaches a multi-age class of K-1-2 and has found that video clips do wonders for her teaching. I found the media converter website to be easy to use. I have like the web browser plug-in as my wife has been using it a lot.
What was I scared of? Converting and downloading a Youtube video on a bilingual children's book was so easy. The steps were very easy and I think from now on I can use this program while I am teaching Turkish. I wouldn't need internet connection to play Youtube videos.
Now, adding the video into Photostory is another story! That seemed confusing to me and we learned about this towards the end of the semester where more requirements are piling up. Therefore, I didn't even give it a try. During the semester break, I will see if I can add this video in to my digital story. I believe videos do have a place in digital stories but I need to for myself if it is worth my time or not.
Most of thgese tools work pretty well...FLV sees to be the odds on favorite.
