Blog Assignment 6

Post a comment in which you discuss one or more topics you are considering for your final semester project. Beginning next week, you will be asked to begin writing a first draft of a script on the topic you plan to use for the final project. So for this week's blog posting, you should include a brief outline of at least some of the major themes you think may be included in your project.

I can't seem to find a way to convert the .m3u file from Engines of Ingenuity. I have been able to save it as a .mov and .qtl but neither are accepted by PhotoStory. I wasn't in class last week and would appreciate any information anyone has for converting .m3u files into PhotoStory.

Possible outline for final project

The broad topic I have intended since the first week with my 10 pictures has been Distance Learning. I have been working with distance learning for almost 6 years now and believe that it definitely has a place in education. For the past few weeks, my thoughts have begun to narrow the topic down somewhat and I’m not yet sure how I will approach it for my final project digital story. But for now, a preliminary outline might look like this:

The History of Distance Learning
• PAST: Evolution from U.S. Mail Correspondence courses to interacting with content, instructor, and other students through the WWW.
o Communication
o Assessment
• CURRENT TRENDS: The Impact on Online Learning with the Change of direction of Distance Learning at a local Community College System
o Philosophy
o Department formation
• Developing an Effective Online Learning Environment
o Organization and consistency
o Ease of navigation
o Accessible content
o Resources
o Alignment of learning materials and assessments with learning outcomes

I can not seem to download the Engines of Inginuity episode either. It automatically saves as any file and will not show me an option of music files.

Blog Assignment 6

I have chosen No. 2312: More Than One Computer for my midterm project. I picked this episode because it talks about the many ways we use computers in the past and present.

FYI - I tried to download the audio file to my desktop and it gave me only the .m3u version. I then did the following steps:

- Open the file in windows media player.

- Right click on the botton bar to bring up the file menu.

- Click file Save As...while the episode is playing.

- In the File Name menu: change the .m3u to .wmv

When finished, close file then open it again. It will say something about the file is not being recognized in that extension and it may not run correctly. I simply pressed ok and it converted from the text file to a wave file.

The idea for my final project is how media, particularly news and journalism, has changed our perspective of the norm. I will also look into the issue of whether or not we are really even thinking for ourselves anymore due to the many outlets of media and each one's own bias. The areas I will discuss are:
1. Differences in the rate at which we receive news, past and present
2. Different media/technology outlets
3. Endless amount of choices within each of those outlets (different TV and radio stations, magazines, journals, podcasts, newspapers, etc.)
4. How one story can be portrayed differently through two different media outlets
5. Question whether or not we are thinking for ourselves or allowing our favorite news station, magazine, etc. to spoon feed us information

Thank you Coretta! I thought I had clicked all over that Windows Media screen and couldn't find a menu to save. Dr. Robin's instructions were to file save but I just couldn't find it.

For my final project I would like to extend my current photo story on the process of making a contemporary painting inspired by fads and trends. I will add;
1. a section on the initial inspiration from current fads and trends at the begining.
2. write and record a proper script.
3. Then follow up with what happens to a finished painting, the piece in my photo story is on display at Lawndale Art Center, and will be in a silent auction. I will document that process.

My brain is locked when it comes to my topic for my finished project. I want it to be good, entertaining, and personalized, but have yet to figure out what I will do to achieve that outcome.

My Engines of Ingenuity activity is about colonial America. I have some basic ideas regarding the images I hope to use.

The topic for pop culture theme is comics, cartoons, animation. As a result, I will be doing a series of cartoon present and past and how I see it from a womens point of view as well as a hispanic point view. The way we grow up, the culture we embrace is usually how we view things and I want to portray that in digital photo story. I will critique the photo story as I go along on how I felt about certain cartoons and why that feeling has occurred... still trying to finalize things.. but that is the beginning..

For my final project, I would like to explore the transformative nature of an arts-based integrated curriculum in a Title I elementary school in NW Houston. In my reaearch, I focus on the students, teachers, and community partners who are involved in this school. However, for this digital story, I would like to look at the art created by the students and maybe focus on the teachers, as well...see how long the story gets.

My story will look at:

1. Student-as-artist; student-as-teacher
2. Teacher-as-artist; teacher-as-student.

My project will be research-based and bring in various theories that support implementing such a program in all of our schools!

At least, this is how I have it organized in my head at this time.

The topic for my final project is Propaganda in Journalism. The idea is to present how propaganda has historically been portrayed in journalism, ways in which is it is portrayed and how it shapes audiences' opinions/beliefs. In particular, the digital narrative will address:

1. a history of propaganda in journalism
2. the methods employed for promoting propaganda in journalism
3. examples of propaganda in journalism
4. the ways in which propaganda shapes our beliefs, decisions, etc.

Thanks to Coretta for explaining how to download the mp3 file of Engines episodes rather than than the m3u file which cannot be imported into Photo Story.

Don't forget that the instructions for doing this are available by clicking on the link under the Hands-On Assignment 6a listing on the Class Six web page.

Or you can click on this link:
http://courses.coe.uh.edu/brobin/resources/engines/engines.htm

Also, Emmie pointed out that in some newer versions of Windows Media Player, the menu options at the top of the screen may be hidden. If that's the case, place your mouse at the top of the screen where the menu should be and right click. This should display a selection of choices, including one that allows you to save the file.

My topic for the final project is music and since I teach 6th grade World Culture, I want to explore international hip-hop music as a medium to address or question local social and political issues.

The topic that I drew/was assigned was pop-culture and food. I have deliberated on several angles, and to my discovery there were many they all have to be fleshed out. I have hypothesized and will argue that food is more than just sustenance, that it is a reflection of ourselves, our way of thinking, our attitude toward others and our lifestyle.

I will, in my digital story, show these ideas in a way that will make us laugh, think, frown and then look at the floor. It is my goal to open the window to let out some stale air and let in some fresh. I believe that you cannot change or control that of which you are unaware.

The topic I was assigned for my popular culture project was fads and trends, and it has really been difficult for me to narrow down a specific topic I would like to explore. Fads and trends covers so much in history, and in popular culture today, and I feel like I have almost too much freedom in deciding what I would do for my photo story. Right now, and for my presentation next week I believe that I am going to look at tattoos as a trend especially as it continues to increase in popularity. I also want to look at the cultural significance of tattoos, and some of the history. I have to work on narrowing down exactly what I will include in my final photo story.

I plan to DS on the 3 primary ways research has looked Toys in education. These are as tools for play observation, lessons based on mechanics of various toys (ie, hydrolics taught with a water gun) and the third being using toys and games which have meaning to students whos various components can be used to illustrate lessons.

My topic is a personal narration on learning English through Turkish/English children's books. I have already written some part of my script and narrated it but there is more to add. My story stars with telling my first experiences with English in elementary school in Turkey where I was a failure. Then I tell about the bilingual books that my parents bought me and how they somehow helped me increase my vocabulary. However, there are some mistakes with the books which I did not realize as a child but I am aware now as a second language education doctorate student. I will point out to those errors and make recommendations as to how bilingual story books need to be. Any ideas om how I can expand the story is appreciated.

Commercials will be my focus for the final project. My thoughts so far is to gather commericals on one particular product from the past to the present. I am going to attempt to explore the different types of propaganda that was used through the years to promote this product.

The topic of my final project is Fashion, therefore my photostory will go around this theme. I would like to develop my story on how fashion has changed through the years and specifically I am going to use pictures of 1 or 2 fashion things that were characteristic of the different decades since the 20s untill today.

After the presentation in Dr. White's class, I realized the frustration of presenting a idea that you are not familiar with. I think I will think about the final project in the way or topic that really interests me. I came from different cultural background. It's a weakness, but it will be a strength in the other point.

My project is going to stick to my theme from Cam's class which is toys. To make it personal I'm going to talk about how the toys we play with as children can affect our outlook and the grid we filter our learning through. I was an only child and we lived in the country so I spent a lot of time playing alone. I intend to use photos of toys that I played with as an example.

The idea that I am going to do for my final project is a look at how commercials are part of our popular culture. We might see them as a chance to run to the t.v. or change the channel but could they show what we want in general or what is new. They can also show what people want in the past.

JakeWalker said...

In discussing toys in education, i'll have 4 basic areas.
I intro of toys
II toys as catylists for observation of play
III lessons formed around a toy's operation
IV lessons derrived from play stratagies.
